Sapporo Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival 016.JPG
A snow sculpture team member from the Switzerland looks over a model of two wrestlers. Using ice picks, chisels and hatchets, teams from around the world, turn blocks of frozen snow into detailed scupltures. These are not traditional Frosty the Snowmen, but huge carved and chiseled Samurai Warriors, Buddhists gods, historical heroes of fairy tales and Walt Disney characters. Some stand as big as buildings. Chiseled out of tons of packed snow, the sculptures are the pride and job of the residents of Sapporo, Japan, who hosts the world famous Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival for five days in early February.Themes of the sculptures are picked from Kabuki stages, historical characters or fairy tales.
