Sapporo Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival 006.JPG
Festival goers slide down an ice slide at the Japanese Self Defense Force Base at Makomanai. Nearly two million visitors pour into Sapporo every February to see over 200 ice and snow sculptures. These are not traditional Frosty the Snowmen, but huge carved and chiseled Samurai Warriors, Buddhists gods, historical heroes of fairy tales and Walt Disney characters. Some stand as big as buildings. Chiseled out of tons of packed snow, the sculptures are the pride and job of the residents of Sapporo, Japan, who hosts the world famous Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival for five days in early February.Themes of the sculptures are picked from Kabuki stages, historical characters or fairy tales.
