Showa Daibutsu Buddha 002.JPG
Prayers hang near tte Showa Daibutsu, a 70-foot-tall statue, that meditates from a mountain side perch overlooking rice fields and Aomori City, Japan. The buddha is taller than the figure at Nara, which rises about 349 feet and nearly doubles the 38-foot-tall buddha at Kamakura. The structure costs about $6 million to build. One day a year, visitors pray for all the unborn babies by placing dolls and toys near a small shrine on the temple grounds. In Japan, where abortions are commonplace and accepted, the hillside is spotted by pinwheels representing a marker for unborn babies that blows in the wind near the huge buddha. (Jim Bryant Photo)..
