Sapporo Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival 023.JPG
Japanese Self Defense Force snow sculptures turn snow into water that will be applied to help reinforce a snow sculpture in Odori Park. These are not traditional Frosty the Snowmen, but huge carved and chiseled Samurai Warriors, Buddhists gods, historical heroes of fairy tales and Walt Disney characters. Some stand as big as buildings. Chiseled out of tons of packed snow, the sculptures are the pride and job of the residents of Sapporo, Japan, who hosts the world famous Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival for five days in early February.Themes of the sculptures are picked from Kabuki stages, historical characters or fairy tales.
